Taking yoga into the water involves much more than simply getting wet. It also involves much more than just standing balance postures in the water. The properties of water and how our bodies interact with those properties requires thoughtfulness in how to adapt the land version of the posture to the water. Buoyancy grants us lift and relief from stress on the joints; given this benefit we have a pathway for release, but then how does one match that release with strength? Flotation equipment that is utilized in an assistance mode can also be called into a resistance role. Stabilizing the body and giving it an additional reference point other than the pool bottom is especially meaningful as the body navigates random fluid movement.
